Oldest US Family-Owned Market Restores with Decorative Ceiling Tiles

Written by Milan Jara on 22nd Jan 2013

We at Decorative Ceiling Tiles confess to being a little star-struck. But who could blame us when our products have been used to glamorize such star-studded events as TV’s Emmy® Awards and the American Country Awards? So when we heard that our tiles were going to be used on beautiful, historic Mackinac Island, Michigan, we couldn’t help but think of one of our favorite films, “Somewhere in Time”. Doud’s Market restores with Decorative Ceiling Tiles—what a dream come true!

History in the Making

Established in 1884, Doud’s Market, the oldest family-owned grocery and delicatessen in America, is located on this quaint Island in Lake Michigan. From its settling by the Straits Indians through Fort Mackinac and the War of 1812, this incredible location has been important in American history and culture, and came to be even more well-known when it was used as the setting for the hauntingly romantic time-travel film featuring Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve.

The island was chosen as the film’s location in part because of its beauty and also because it prohibits automobiles and other mechanized vehicles. The romantic atmosphere of the island attracts many brides and grooms who want a lovely old-fashioned ceremony complete with horse-drawn carriages.

Something for Everyone

Mackinac is also famous for its delicious fudge and its fragrant and beautiful annual lilac festival. Activities for summer visitors to the Island include biking, fishing, picnicking, hiking, and swimming; while winter sports include ice skating, ice fishing, and cross-country skiing.

Doud’s

Doud’s serves residents and visitors year-round with deli sandwiches, salads, and many types of pizzas. Many visitors stop in to order freshly prepared food for their picnics. Doud’s also provides catering for parties and wedding receptions and boasts a complete selection of beer, wine, and spirits.
